Description

Change of System Impossible With Hizbullah Arms Lebanon's political system was back in the limelight in January and February following a campaign by House Speaker Nabih Berri to abolish political sectarianism. The issue was further fueled by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was quoted as telling US magazine the New Yorker that civil strife in Lebanon could erupt within days unless its sectarian political system is changed. The relevance of the 1989 Taif Accord, which ended 15 years of fierce civil fighting by devising a formula under which powers were divided more equally between Muslims and Christians, is obviously being questioned. It was incorporated into the Lebanese constitution in 1990. Although Taif called for eventually abolishing political sectarianism, many Lebanese, notably Christian leaders, both from the opposition minority and the ruling majority, fear any move in that direction at this time will further erode the power of Christians.
